While the peak of our milk production is always in May, September is generally the best month for our milk price because Arla need to ensure they have enough cheese for Christmas!
Given milk production will begin to slow, September gives us a chance to look at the condition of our herd. We have a person who comes in to monitor and record the condition of each and every cow, giving them a score. That condition scoring will dictate all the future actions in terms of managing the herd – to see if they need extra feed before the winter, or whether they should be milked once a day.
By the end of the month we’ll start drying off which is the period when we stop milking and start preparing the cows for winter and next year’s calving.
